Developing the Young Workforce

The Ridge was recently awarded a contract by Developing the Young Workforce, to design and deliver a course for Employers across Edinburgh, East and Midlothian, looking at delivery of excellent work placements.
Developing the Young Workforce, Scotland’s Youth Employment Strategy is about delivering a step change in employer engagement, making it easier for businesses to engage in a meaningful, appropriate and “outcome” driven way to help shape and recruit youth talent ensuring a positive destination for every young person in the region.

The course covers a range of topics, including consideration of the benefits of offering work placements to young people; the importance of structure (being/during/after) for a successful placement, and relationships with referring agencies such as schools/colleges.

We have delivered 3 of 10 courses so far, with more courses to be scheduled into 2017. Feedback from course participants has been unanimously enthusiastic, and any employers already delivering or considering delivering work placements are warmly invited to take advantage of this opportunity to share experiences, explore new approaches and seek advice. Please do get in touch if you are interested or would like to hear more.

As part of this course, we developed materials, based on the Ridge’s own employer/trainee materials, which have been adopted by DYW and are available in editable format, so that employers can brand and adapt to suit their own needs. Again, if you would like a copy of the Employer Toolkit and/or the Trainee Pack, please get in touch. They will be available online shortly also, via the DYW website.
